A Note from our President

We had a real inspirational treat with Mark Ingles, the double amputee who climbed Mount Everest. Mark shared with us his amazing story of how he was trapped in an ice cave for 13 days, resulting in losing his legs to frostbite. His attitude deserves a gold medal as he turns every challenge into an opportunity, and went on to climb Mt. Everest with artificial legs. The event that was jointly presented with XL Results Foundation was successful and raised over $12k to send kids from West Island School to Kyzastine for a trek and community service. A big thank you to all those who participated in this worth while cause.

Our meeting on May 15th this month had a great turn out and was a real eye-opener. Rob Kushner of Urban Trend gave us a show and tell of his inventions and products sold to mass market stores in the US such as The Sharper Image, Brookstone and Walmart. Rob gave us an honest view of his dealings from the factory to retailers with humorous stories of each product case study.

Starting in June, we will resume our monthly meetings to the first Tuesday of the month. We have to shift our schedule from time to time to accommodate the speaker's availability and avoid conflict with public holidays. However, we will do our best to stick to a regular schedule. But please, read the newsletter as we may need to change our date and venue on short notice.

As you can see below, we are beginning to add value to your E Club membership. We are starting with a junk trip, with a factory visit in the fall, an expert panel in July and more social visits and networking for members only.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, we look forward to hearing from you and I look forward to seeing you at our June meeting.

Best regards,

Alexandra Yung

 Topic:  The Pacific Coffee Story

Speaker - Thomas Neir
Founder and former CEO, Pacific Coffee Company

Thomas Neir is the founder and former Chief Executive Officer of Pacific Coffee Company, a retailer and wholesaler of specialty coffee in Southeast Asia

Following graduation from Darden, Mr. Neir rose through the financial leadership ranks of Cupertino, California-based high-tech firm Tandem Computers. Tandem transferred Mr. Neir to Hong Kong in late 1990 to serve as the Regional Financial Manager. In June 1992, Tandem promoted him to the Asia-Pacific senior management team as Regional Controller/Business Development Manager.

After founding Pacific Coffee in 1993, Mr. Neir expanded the business to 45 outlets in Hong Kong and Singapore. Under his leadership, Pacific Coffee has successfully cultivated a coffee culture in an Asian consumer market with a long tradition of tea-drinking.

In May of 2005 Mr. Neir sold Pacific Coffee to a locally Hong Kong listed company for HK$205 million (US$26.5 million). At that time there were over 45 retail units and a healthy wholesale coffee business generating over US$25 million in annual sales.

Mr. Neir is currently assisting Hong Kong International School on a variety of business issues and researching new ventures addressing the global greenhouse gas issue.
